Robert "Bobby" Pick Obituary

Robert "Bobby" Bredette Pick II of West Bend, Wisconsin passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, February 16th after a brief illness at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.  He was a month shy of his 77th birthday.

Bobby was the eldest of five children born in West Bend to Robert and Lois Pick on March 18, 1941.  He attended McLane Grade School, St. John's Military Academy (Delafield), and West Bend High School where he participated in baseball, basketball, golf and cross country.  As a youth, he became fascinated by the intricate and lost art of keeping the detailed record of a baseball game and was taught by his father, an avid baseball fan, how to do it.  Bobby honed this skill and it stayed with him his whole life as he became renown in southeastern Wisconsin for his precise official recordings of high school, college, and recreation league games.  In 2017 he was inducted into the West Bend Baseball Association Wall of Fame and recognized for his dedication to meticulous scorekeeping over 50 years.

Following graduation from high school, Bobby enlisted in the US Navy and went through basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Lake County, Illinois.  He served in a number of locations including White Sands Missle Range in New Mexico, but his most notable tour of duty was aboard the USS Enterprise for a number of its missions retrieving astronauts and spacecraft after splashdown.  After his Navy service, Bobby lived for a short time in Florida before returning to Washington County where he lived out his life, as did his father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and great great-grandfather.

Former high school, collegiate and pro baseball standout and Wisconsin Hall of Fame coach Doug Gonring said about Bobby, "Bob, was the best teammate on a baseball field I ever had... Bob showed young men what was imperfect in baseball and what is so perfect that baseball is.  He showed them respect, accountability, and dedication but most of all, for 30 years he showed each team or family how important it is to have friends. "

Over his life, Bobby held a number of jobs in shoe and record sales, landscaping, and food service.  He spent several years working at the Slinger Foundry and was elected president of the union.

Robert Pick is survived by sister Suzanne "Suzie" Pick Leto of Carpentersville, Illinois, brother Carl "Cappy"A. (Barbara) Pick of Honolulu, Hawaii, daughter Michelin K.
