John E. Zalewski

John E. “Jack” Zalewski, 67, of the town of Kewaskum, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at Kathy Hospice in the town of Polk after a courageous battle with cancer.


He was born on December 20, 1942, in Milwaukee, the son of Thomas S. Zalewski Sr. and Kathryn Schubert. Jack was raised in Slinger by his aunt and uncle, Everett and Leah Schubert, and was a graduate of Slinger High School, where he was known as John “Jack” Schubert. Following high school, Jack proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy from May 1961 to May 1965. On December 2, 1967, he was united in marriage to Diane Schmidt at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum.


Jack was a Master Certified ASE Auto Technician. He was employed by Schill Motor in Campbellsport from 1965-1973, Schwartzburg Chevrolet and Oldsmobile in West Bend from 1984-1992 and Herriges Oil in Kewaskum from 1995 until his illness in 2008. Jack also owned and operated his own business, J & J Auto Service, in Kewaskum from 1975-1983. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum and Moose Lodge West Bend 1398.


Jack enjoyed muscle cars, drag racing, horseback riding, riding his Harley motorcycle, camping at Horseman’s Park and had a soft spot for all types of animals. His pride and joy was his 1970 Chevelle “Little Ditty”. He attended many car shows over the years and made many friends through those shows, especially the Grand Larsony Classic Custom Car Show, which was held for Jack’s benefit in 2008.


Those Jack leaves behind to cherish his memory include his wife, Diane; a daughter, Shawn (Scott) Zimmerman of Algonquin, Illinois; his mother, Kathryn Stranc of Kewaskum; his brothers and sisters, Tom (Barbara) Zalewski of Hortonville, Donald Zalewski of West Bend, Susan Hahn of Waupun, Paul Gruendeman of Modesto, California and Jeanne Corallini of Fort Myers, Florida; his parents-in-law, Harold “Shorty” and Ruth Schmidt of West Bend; three sisters-in-law, Jane (Gerald) Rettler of Campbellsport, Joyce (Robert) Bernhagen of Kewaskum, and Mary Cay Schmidt of West Bend; a brother-in-law, David (Karen) Schmidt of Hartford; his nieces and nephews, Ben (Heather) Rettler, Andy (Sue) Rettler, Melissa (Ricky) Kratz, Nicole Schmidt, Craig Bernhagen (also Jack’s godson), Anna Bernhagen, Joe Egerer and Chris (Kerri) Hahn, other relatives, many friends and the family dog, Ja’Di.


Jack was preceded in death by his father and a brother-in-law, LeRoy Schmidt.


A Mass of Christian Burial for Jack was held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, 2010, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 331 Main Street in Kewaskum with Father Edwin Kornath officiating. Military honor rites by members of the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum followed Mass, and burial was at 10:00 a.m. on Monday in the parish cemetery.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.


Jack’s family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Tim Fenske, Julie Pruett, NP, the staff on floors 4NT and 4 NW of Froedtert Hospital, the Day Hospital, the Kathy Hospice staff, also family and friends, the Zimmerman family, Rich Wondra, John and Linda Thorn and Sue Bales for all the care and support provided to Jack and his family.
