Gertrude “Gert” Roots, 88, of West Bend, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017, in Deerfield, Illinois.
Gert was born on June 4, 1928, the daughter of the late Paul and Mathilda (Trarback) Roge. On June 5, 1948, she was united in marriage to William Roots in Milwaukee.
Gert was a member St. Luke Lutheran Church in Slinger and was very active in missions to El Salvador. She graduated from UWM and also received her Master’s Degree from UWM. Gert was a special education teacher in Mequon and Milwaukee. She also worked as a teacher at Cardinal Stritch College. The Association of Educators for Special Needs awarded her Special Education Teacher of the Year.
Gert and Bill loved traveling and never had their fill of viewing a new part of the world. This meant a travel through 36 countries and all 50 states. The special country they both loved was New Zealand. Gert and Bill enjoyed presenting travel logs, based on many of their trips.
Those Gert leaves behind to cherish her memory include her husband, William; three children, Kimball (Barry) Roots of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brian (Ruth) Roots of Deerfield, Illinois and Linda (Terry Markovich) Roots of New York, New York; two grandchildren, Naomi (Oscar) Roots-Quintana and Paul (Sarah) Roots; two great grandchildren, Saya and Julien Quintana; a brother-in-law, Ronald Moore; other relatives and friends.
Gert’s greatest love was for her family and she would drop anything to be with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gertrude desired, more than anything, to support and assist her family. Following retirement, Gert and Bill moved to Cedar Ridge and enjoyed an active life with friends in that community. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Gert was preceded in death by her siblings, Frieda Moore and Edward (Mildred) Roge.
A funeral service for Gert will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 4860 Arthur Road, in Slinger with Rev. Matthew Short officiating. Private family burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee.
